Job Summary
The Senior Environmental Health Officer (SEHO) will lead the integration of environmental and public health principles into WASH (Water, Sanitation and Hygiene) programming. This role involves overseeing hygiene promotion, risk reduction, sanitation infrastructure, and water safety initiatives to ensure sustainable and health-focused interventions in Tigray.

The SEHO will also play a key role in community engagement, behavior change strategies, and monitoring public health outcomes.


Key Responsibilities

Technical Implementation and Oversight

  • Conduct hygiene promotion, risk assessments, and mobilization efforts.

  • Design and implement community-centered behavior change strategies.

  • Lead water quality testing and environmental risk mapping.

  • Manage and monitor the distribution of WASH-related NFIs.

  • Ensure inclusivity in sanitation programming, addressing vulnerable populations.

  • Conduct field visits for monitoring and identifying program improvements.

  • Lead KAP surveys and post-distribution impact assessments.

  • Document and share best practices, case studies, and program outcomes.

Coordination and Stakeholder Engagement

  • Represent the organization in local and regional WASH cluster meetings.

  • Collaborate with government bodies, NGOs, and local structures.

  • Integrate WASH interventions with health, nutrition, education, and agriculture sectors.

  • Support WASH committees and health extension workers in implementing sanitation plans.

Monitoring, Reporting, and Learning

  • Collect and report data in collaboration with MEAL teams.

  • Avoid duplication of efforts through accurate documentation and coordination.

  • Strengthen monitoring and feedback systems for public health and WASH.

Capacity Building and Team Support

  • Train and mentor WASH staff and community health workers.

  • Support community-led WASH initiatives through technical guidance.

  • Develop and support sanitation improvement plans and local governance systems.

  • Design inclusive programs addressing the needs of marginalized communities.

Qualifications and Experience

  • MSc or BSc in Environmental Health, Water Resource Engineering, or related field.

  • 3+ years (MSc) or 5+ years (BSc) in relevant WASH or public health roles.

  • Experience in guideline development and policy documentation.

  • Proven project and team management experience.

  • Familiarity with matrix management and interdepartmental collaboration.


Skills and Competencies

  • Proficiency in Epanet, AutoCAD, and other engineering tools.

  • Strong skills in Microsoft Office, SPSS, and data analysis.

  • Excellent communication, proposal writing, and strategic planning abilities.

  • Experience working in diverse, high-pressure environments.
